What is a Parish Nurse?

A registered nurse who is an enabler of holistic health for the congregation.

 

What does a Parish Nurse do?

  • Educates in health and wellness by providing classes, literature, etc, that promote physical, spiritual and mental health.
  • Counsel in person about health concerns by discussing questions or needs. Home and hospital visits may be possible.
  • Acts as a liaison to established community resource services.
  • Trains and coordinates volunteers in health related needs.
  • Clarifier of the close relationship between spiritual and physical health by encouraging the healing ministry of the church.
 

Who is the Parish Nurse?

The Parish Nurse is Virginia Garrison. She is a registered nurse who is currently employed by St. Joseph's Hospital. She resides with her husband Lonnie in their Tacoma home.

 

When is the Parish Nurse available?

Virginia will be available every Tuesday. Her hours are from 12-4, in room 7. Her scheduled days are in the church office. She may be contacted during her office hours (253-537-0201) or at home (253-471-9569).

 

What is Holistic Health?

We humans have physical, mental and spiritual aspects. Each aspect relates to the others and can affect the others when illness occurs. Holistic Health is the process of physical, mental and spiritual health. It is a process because we are ever changing beings. And change can bring on stress and/or illness.

 

What does the Parish Nurse do to advocate Holistic Health?

  • Physical and Mental Health - - Educates and counsels in health related questions. Makes referrals to community services.
  • Spiritual Health - - Encourages a healthy relationship with God. Encourages prayer, study or any other activity that feeds our spiritual health. We can maintain wholeness in the face of illness if we are honestly at peace with ourselves and with our God.
